Securing a secondary school place can be a complex process for parents. Winton Academy operates as a non-selective school. This means that unlike grammar schools in the local area, it does not require children to sit an entrance examination (the 11+) to be eligible for a place. Instead, places are allocated based on specific criteria, usually prioritizing looked-after children, siblings, and geographical distance from the school.
The BCP Coordinated Admissions Scheme
For entry into Year 7, applications to Winton Academy are managed through the BCP Council Coordinated Admissions Scheme. This centralizes the application process across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole, ensuring that parents only need to submit one application form to their home local authority, ranking their preferred schools.
Key Timeline for Year 7 Entry
- Early September: The application window opens on the BCP Council admissions portal. Parents are encouraged to attend open evenings.
- 31 October (National Deadline): This is the absolute final date to submit your secondary school application. Late applications are heavily penalized and usually only considered after all on-time applications have been processed.
- 1 March (National Offer Day): You will receive an email or letter from your local authority offering you a single school place.
- Spring/Summer Term: The window for appealing a decision or joining a waiting list opens.
Oversubscription and Catchment
Winton Academy has a published admission number (PAN), which contributes to its total capacity of 900 pupils. When a school receives more applications than it has places available, it is legally "oversubscribed."
In these instances, strict oversubscription criteria dictate who is offered a place. While the school is non-selective, distance from the child's home to the school is often the final deciding factor (the "tie-breaker").
